No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs
The Inspiring Story of Lord Taylor of Warwick

Black British Lord to tour the States to publicise new audio book.

From humble beginnings, the son of Jamaican immigrants, John Taylor rose to become the youngest and only black Lord in the British House of Lords. This is an inspirational story of a man who experienced racism in the full glare of a British media feeding-frenzy and rose above it to become one of Britain’s most prominent politicians.

Date: 10 April 2004

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(London, England) – Lord Taylor of Warwick, the black member of the British House of Lords, judge and Vice-President of the British Board of Film Classification is to visit the United States in early May 2004 to publicise his new audio book ‘No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs’ on which he tells in his own words the inspiring story of his life and career.

From humble beginnings, the son of Jamaican immigrants, John Taylor was brought up in the industrial heartland of Birmingham, England. “When my mother arrived in England, she was desperate to find a place to live,” Lord Taylor says. “But wherever she looked there were signs in the window saying ‘No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs’. In the depth of her despair she prayed to God for help. She asked Him that one day her baby son might become one of the great men of England.” At the time, this would have been regarded as an impossibility.

In 1996, he was admitted to the House of Lords as the youngest and only black Lord amongst 1,700 Dukes, Duchesses, Earls, Viscounts, Bishops, Barons and Law Lords. He took the title The Right Honourable Lord Taylor of Warwick.

Lord Taylor has become one of Britain's most senior black politicians. He is also a BBC network television and radio host and an internationally acclaimed inspirational speaker. Lord Taylor's judgement has an impact far beyond the historic Houses of Parliament. For example, he is one of only four people who have the tough task of censoring Hollywood movies seen by the British public. Of this role he says, “The big film issues are sex, drugs and violence. There’s a lot of it about. You don’t get chosen for this kind of work if Bambi gives you nightmares.”

On the new CD audio book ‘No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs’ Lord Taylor is interviewed by the British presenter Roy Sheppard about his childhood, role models, religion, legal career, entry into politics and experiences with racism.

Lord Taylor experienced racism first-hand throughout his life, not least when in 1990 his political party selected him to run for a Parliamentary seat in the all-White highly affluent town of Cheltenham. At the time, a photograph of the candidate was not required, so when Lord Taylor showed up to meet local party members a row erupted which kept him on the front pages of the National Press for weeks. Some local people openly opposed the selection of "a bloody nigger from London" to represent them. Some cancelled their party membership. Lord Taylor and his family faced racist hate mail, death threats, degrading leaflets and other insults. Yet, throughout his highly public ordeal, Taylor kept calm and focused. He says, “My advice for future John Taylors is ‘Don’t get bitter, get better!”

The release of ‘No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs’ coincides with a speaking tour in North America by Lord Taylor of Warwick, starting in early May. To interview Lord Taylor of Warwick, please contact Roy Sheppard by phone at +44 1761 414676, fax +44 1761 412615, or Roy@PeoplePortfolio.com.
