Church Gives Back [6th December 2007]

[6th December 2007]

This report was written by Edwin Atiegoba Bello about what his local Church is doing in its community.

'The New Covenant church has numerous branches in the UK. It also has branches in Nigeria and the United States.

I have attended the Old Kent road branch since I was 11 years old. The branch has only recently moved to a new building on the Old Kent from a school not too far away on New Kent road.

The branch has numerous projects running in the local community. The local community being most of the borough of Southwark. The amount of projects that the church has been able to carry out has increased since they moved to their new building. The church is keen to use, the talents of its members to help those who are in need.

The church runs free I.T classes, language classes and a nursery. The church also allows people to make use of its library. Apart from these the church also runs counselling sessions and healing rooms where you can be prayed for if you are unwell. Also there is a soup kitchen available, as well as a breakfast evangelism service where people can come in and get something to eat and be ministered to. These events are all specific to the Old Kent road branch.

However by far the biggest project the branch runs is the ‘We Care’ project. This is a project which takes place once a year. It usually takes place in mid December in the build up to Christmas. During this event the church collects clothes donated to them. These are then given away to those who need them. Food is also made available. The church choir sings carols and there are also sometimes dancers from the church youth group. Also on the day there is counselling and employment information. In previous years there have been free car washes and shoe polishing at the event. Christmas hampers are also given away to families.'
