Lord Taylor of Warwick Slams Road Pricing and Rappers [23rd May 2007]

[23rd May 2007]

Lord Taylor of Warwick, black conservative peer, on Channel 5 TV’s discussion show The Wright Stuff this morning:

“The government’s supposed road pricing draft private scheme is not only draft but daft. It was warned in February, as a result of its own research, that the scheme should not be pursued. It takes no account of a driver’s income, wealth, or size of vehicle, so it would penalize the poor, the disabled, shift workers, and those who live in remote rural communities.
“The better option would be to put more money into public transport so that less people would need to drive cars. Also petrol prices could be increased. 1.8 million people objected to the proposed scheme on the government’s own website. But the government has arrogantly ignored this and the objection from various motoring organizations and transport academics.
“Last night I tabled three parliamentary questions concerning road pricing. The government will have to respond to my questions within fourteen days.”

Lord Taylor was also asked to comment on politically incorrect language. He said:
“I particularly denounce the use of the ‘N’ word used by black hip hop rap singers. They say they are reclaiming the ‘N’ word. By using it, they are showing no respect for their own race and culture. So how can they expect others to respect the black community? Rappers like Snoop Dog and 50 Cent need to show more responsibility in the lyrics they write.”
