The Taylor Test - Taylor Truisms [3rd September 2005]

[3rd September 2005]

The Taylor Test is my personal credo or yardstick, that I use to evaluate any political proposal, policy or personal plans. TTT is based on a number of Taylor Truisms. They have been gathered from 4 main sources: Personal experience; Spiritual teachings; Legal maxims; Ancient proverbs. They will be added to as I continue to grow older and hopefully wiser! Any comments are welcome. Just use the Guest Book!

ACTION

Never mistake motion for action

AIMS

Set goals which stretch you, not stress you

Your attitude determines your altitude

ANGER

Anger has no eyes

Anger punishes itself

A soft answer, turns away wrath

When wrath speaks, wisdom veils her face

BEGINNINGS

All rivers start with a spring

Great oaks from little acorns grow

CAUTION

Look twice before you cut once

The best cloth may have a moth

No garden is without weeds

Every light has its shade

Don’t sell the skin till you have caught the bear

Don’t sell fish that are still in the water

The bait hides the hook

Honey catches more flies than vinegar

Haste means waste

Prevention is better than cure

Buy cheap, buy twice

Soon ripe, soon rotten

CHANGE

Change is inevitable, growth optional

CHILDREN

It is easier to build a strong child, than repair a broken man

What children hear at home, soon flies abroad

He that has no children, brings them up well

ETHICS

Values are caught, not taught

EXCUSES

A bad excuse is worse than none

FAITH

Faith can move mountains

Faith opens locked door

Be faithful, not fearful

Be alert, not alarmed

FAMILY

The family that prays together, stays together

FEAR

Fear is a great inventor

FREEDOM

Liberty is not licence

FRIENDSHIP

Real friendship does not freeze in winter

Better an open enemy, than a false friend

The best mirror is an old friend

He who gossips to you, will gossip about you

Many kiss the hand they wish to cut off

A crowd is not company

If you run with wolves, you will soon learn to howl

GOD

Man aspires, God inspires

Inspirational is more than motivational

Only God can make us more than we are

God is the God of second chances

We do not know what the future holds, but we know who holds the future

Not every good idea is a God idea

God looks at quality, not quantity

HAPPINESS

Joy is more constant than happiness

You cannot measure pleasure

LAW

A penny of love is worth a pound of law

Nobody should judge his own cause

Justice must not only be done, but seen to be done

Hard cases make bad law

A litigant must come to court with clean hands

Two wrongs don’t make a right

Equity hates delay

Buyer beware

Try before you buy

Much law, little justice

Win your lawsuit and lose your money

Agree, for the law is costly

LEADERSHIP

Strive to be not just the best in the world, but the best for the world

Leadership is action, not position

Be called, not driven

He that cannot obey, cannot command

When in doubt, do nowt!

You cannot keep two bulls in one pen

In a calm sea every man is captain

Fame is a magnifying glass

At a round table, there is no dispute of place

He that respects not, is not respected

Play the game, not the occasion

LYING

Half the truth is still a lie

A liar should have a good memory

Man punishes the action, God the intention

LOVE

Love rules its kingdom without a sword

Love conquers all

MARRIAGE

First thrive, then wive

Marriage is a plant which must be often watered

MONEY

Better buy than borrow

Gold goes in at any gate, except heaven’s

A man in debt, is caught in a net

Money is a good servant, but a bad master

Money is potent, faith omnipotent

The rich man does not know who is his true friend

MOTHERS

A mother’s love never ages

The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world

NATURE

Nature is above nurture

OPPORTUNITY

In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity

Better to light a candle than curse the darkness

PATIENCE

Patience is a virtue

Little strokes fell great oaks

Delay does not mean deny

An oak is not felled in one stroke

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

It’s never too late to be the person you were meant to be

Bloom where you are planted

Not all clouds bring rain

Don’t get bitter, get better

A stumble may prevent a fall

Try to relax and enjoy the crisis

Better untaught than ill taught

Knowledge has bitter roots, but sweet fruits

Live to learn and you will learn to live

Train your brain

The unexpected always happens

The camel never sees its own hump

Kind hearts are more than coronets

POLITICS

Distinguish between politics and policy

What is morally wrong, is politically wrong

All politics is local

No root, no fruit

The end does not justify the means

A hungry man is an angry man

When meat is in, anger is out

Pull together, or be pulled apart

Nobility without ability is fragility

RACE RELATIONS

There is only one race- the human race

People should be judged by their actions, not their accents

Build bridges, not walls

You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist

The rain falls on every roof

We are all the same colour when we bleed

Truth never grows old

TEMPTATION

If you give the Devil a toe hold, he’ll turn it into a strangle hold

Hate the sin, not the sinner

If you steal honey, beware the sting

Send to prison as punishment, not for punishment

TRUTH

Truth never grows old

WAR

Wisdom is better than strength

Blessed be the Peacemakers

A just war is better than an unjust peace

Peace makes plenty

The secret wall of a town is peace

The ballot is stronger than the bullet

There is no little enemy

Nothing that is violent is permanent

WORDS

Words cut more than swords

The tongue is not steel, yet it cuts

A good word is never out of season

The pen is mightier than the sword

Find the phrase that pays

A proverb is the wit of one and the wisdom of many

More have repented speech than silence

Be a voice, not an echo

WINNING

You cannot win the race unless you are in it

WORK

Drive your business, do not let it drive you

Keep your shop and your shop will keep you

God gives the milk, but not the bucket

No sweet without sweat

He who begins many things, finishes but few

Early sow, early mow

There are no office hours for leaders
